Can you install a plug-in? Here's a link (to a link) that should give
you a (free) filter to turn white to transparent.
Thanks to all who have helped - the above looks simple enough for my
modest needs, so I will try this and some of the other suggestions.

... The closest you may be able to come is to use Insert=>Picture from file to add your picture from Word and then from the Picture ... Toolbar, with the picture selected in your document use the 'transparency tool' from the picture toolbar and click ... You may want to set a transparent color in your graphics program instead and save the graphic in a format that supports transparent ...
