Darken

I have an image that I want to darken some of its highlights using the Healing Brush Tool.
Here is what I did: I created a new layer and set its blending mode to darken and than used the healing tool in normal mode. That worked fine.

For a comparison I did it a second way which is: created a new layer and left it in normal mode and set the healing brush tool's mode to darken and use it to make the corrections. Both ways gave me good results. Is one of the two methods that I used better than the other to accomplish this task? Do both of the above methods normally give the same results?
