I have some nice interiour pictures of the local church and would like to
embelish a few of them with the effect of rays of light coming in from the
window. I have seen a similar effect in one of the many photoshop
magazines, which I may have thrown away.

Is there a tutorial anywhere on how to do this?

Graham.

Have you tried the inbuilt > filter > render > lighting effects?
or even > filter > render > lens flare

That's more or less what they are there for!
