I get this all the time... people think that Word has to be used as
some sort of 'container' for their pictures.
if you have your original Office CD (mine is Office 97 Pro), the best
solution is to install the Microsoft Photo Editor. Note that this
isn't installed by default and you will have to hunt through the CD to
find it.
Go to your Word file, and copy the photo.
Go to Microsoft Photo Editor, and choose Edit/Paste as New Image.
Then save as TIFF so you can open in Photoshop or whatever.
This procedure seems to preserve the quality of the original and is
far better than a 72dpi screen capture.
