Smart Objects

I'm using CS2 on an XP platform.

I drug an image into a psd file I'm working on. I right clicked and made
the new image a smart object, so resizing would not remove pixels.

Now when I try to work on the image, PS won't let me. How is a smart obejct
supposed to be handled?

I think I've missed something somewhere.
