Do I have to stop going to gatherings?

Being a relative newbie to Rainbow (18th year) it has always been my
fondest dream that when I grew up I might be able to be an "elder" in
the Family.
My dreams are now dust.

Mr. Lookingheart has called himself an elder but he doesn't go to
Gatherings. I don't get it.
Does that mean I have to stop going to Gatherings to realize my
dream???
but...but...that would mean I'd be an elder of nothing!!!
Do I have to attend AGOTT?? I DON'T DRINK!
