don't come to new mexico

for the second time in less than one generation, thousands of huymans
will come to the fragile desert-mountain lands of new mexico. despite
the well-intentioned notion of peace, harmony, and freedom espoused, a
gathering this size does not work in the diminishing wild lands of the
earth. here in new mexico, our home is still struggling with mass die
off of trees and the many life forms they nurtured. already a low
precipitation bioregion, a many-year drought has added to the
challenge of recovery. the last thing we need is the loss of millions
of gallons of water, the toxic fumes of thousands of vehicles, and the
onslaught of hundreds of pigs.

surely we have learned a lot in the past 35+ years of gathering. human
impacts are harsh and recovery difficult even when people are most
thoughtful. yes, the site gets cleaned, and reseeded. but what about
the displaced wild life and thousands of plants and animals that will
be killed so we can party? is it necessary or even desirable?

it is time for a new vision. a vision that sees ALL life as viable
complete parts of a whole and considers this reality in decisions
about where and how we gather. wouldn't it be better to have
simultaneous regional gatherings where numbers can be under 500? where
all the fabulous things about getting together to play and learn will
actually be enhanced and all the negative effects reduced?

think about it. radical change is crucial if we are to have a truely
different world.
