I looked into it - seems like a good system and the price isn't too
bad any more.

There has been talk of using a satellite system at the gathering to
upload Video to youtube - either of OM circles or LEO confrontations.
I don't think the system would work for that.  The upload speed seems
to be pretty slow.  It might take in intolerable amount of time to
upload a 50 mg video.

That's was my conclusion from just looking at info - it seems to me
that maybe you can help folk out here after you've used it for a while
and share your findings - Is a satellite internet practical for gather
media use?

the installer said it's not portable but i can't see why it wouldn't
be, as long as power is available and one knows the angle and bearing
for the sat...i've taken my dishtv into the woods and as long as
there's a clear line-of-sight i've had no probs.  the dish is the same
size and there's also a little receiver that hooks up inside the house
to the puter.  but i've only been online with it for 3 hours so i'm
sure i have much to learn.  but i'm locked in for a minimum of two
years with wildblue so there's plenty of time to get it figured out
and find all the bells and whistles.  i got in on the $40/mo plan and
if all goes well with it, after a couple months i should be able to
cancel dishtv and the landline for the phone thus saving a bunch of
bucks!  i've run a couple of southpark episodes and gotta say it is
great having that ability that i only had previously when i was in a
free wifi area, and of course there are none around this little az

I have a satellite TV dish on my RV that works great with DirecTV.

what I had looked at for a portable Sat internet.  I think it was Gary
Stubbs that was posting about trying to get a satellite internet to

One thing you need to be aware of with WildBlue (and other satellite
AND wireless data providers--ie:verizon, at&t, etc) have very strictly
enforced FAPs. What's a FAP? It's a Fair Access Policy, it's a limit
to your service. The 40$ package has a limit of about 12GB/month.
(reduced from 25GB about two years ago.) For most people who don't
spend a lot of time on the internet, or watch a lot of streaming
video, or if you download games satellite SUXORS.

If you go over your FAP usage, they cut your bandwidth, slow it down.
It works on a "rolling" 30 day calendar. If your previous 29 days of
usage violate the FAP suddenly, you're back on dial up speed. We were
using it out on the Mesa in Taos and were FAPped because we were
watching movies-feature length, .avi format, ~5-700MB each. That
chewed up the FAP within a week or two. Compare WildBlue to Comcast's
FAP, 250GB/mo. Unlimited internet is and has always been a lie. They
have sold us on it since the days of dialup, but it was never true.

Should be portable, it's probably in the contract that you won't
though, may be why the tech said no.
