Death alone does not confer heroism or wisdom. It is what people make of
their lives previous to their deaths that does that. Nor do age or
simple survival confer any special virtue, in and of themselves, without
struggle, transcendence, and service to others.
There will always be a Hero's Journey, and people who chose--or who are
chosen by Fate--to make it. Part of that journey includes a visit to
Hell. Getting through Hell and returning home are necessary--but not
sufficient--elements in healing the wound to the soul that occurs in the
battle.
Equally important is the final stage of being received with honor back
into the community and taking on the role of spiritual warrior or
warrior elder, moving forward by mentoring, guiding, and protecting the
tribe and its youth.
While in Hell, it is useful to create one's own meaning and purpose,
until a larger one makes itself known through the completion of the
journey.

it's :easier: to carry on, with the strength of the fallen at our
shoulder? I often feel in the circle, or walking the meadows, the
strong presence of the ancestors. And I mean by that, not just our
elders in the family, but our ancestors in the peace endeavor
throughout time. Sometimes they poke a finger in our back and raise us
to our feet. Sometimes laughing. Sometimes a scolding finger,
sometimes a genius whispered in the ear. Often a calm in a moment of
crisis. Time stands still. The axe falls. We escape on the side of
right. And live to rise again.
I am thinking of Gandalf the White, and Jesus, Dion Fortune, our
grandmothers, Obi Wan, all symbols of power gaining tenfold after
death. It's a great comfort to have such a crowd of witnesses and
helpers at one's back. And an honor to serve among their in*visible
lights.
Carry on~
