well to clear up one thing miranda is in san jose, just over the moutain so
to speak, california presents alot of problems as it seems to be a haven for
ssi folks, so any lists including doctors presents obstalces to most souls
out there anyway. the hard part is those who are disabled and have some
things mentally that suck more than say someone who is wheelchair bound and
has physical developments. mixing the two is hard to do, and the care is
totally differnt for each. while some areas in the country may have good
clinics for physical problems, it may lack the facilities to handle the
mental problems. and yes each area has its own amount added or not to ssi or
ssdi payments to match the area economics. this doesn't even touch on
places to live, i know of one little town of 2500 that has housing for
disabled but no doctors or specialty clinics to match up with folks.

I'm not Tom, but I do know that adult foster homes work very well
homesfolks who are too frail to attend to daily tasks such as shopping,
cooking, and so forth. They are not a bad alternative to nursing
Disabledwhen one does not have the infrastructure necessary to live
independently. In Eugene, one accesses them through Senior and
hasServices. Not sure what the equivalent in Santa Cruz would be.
Usually there are five or so residents in a regular house/home that
livebeen licensed by the state to provide this level of care. Folks get
their own bedrooom, or sometimes share with one other person. This
arrangement worked very well for sister Angel, who gathered with us
until her emphysema got too bad to continue. She was still able to
fosterindependently for some years after that, but eventually went into
care. Eventually Hospice was also brought in, I believe.
A few of us got together at the Wy Gathering and talked about 'Older"
and disabled issues of care and housing - How to create opportunities
for us to live 'Rainbow' even as we moved towards needing more care.
One way of framing the discussion was to look at myself (or other
disabled/older) as an economic opportunity for an "Intentional
Community" - maybe even one of them back to the land,
multigenerational, self-sustaning, eco-aware hippie kind of places.
As a disabled person (or Older) needing support, I would likely be
eligible for a monthly check for rent and basics, more money to pay
folk for shopping and cleaning, more money to pay for someone to
assist me with personal care, food stamps, Energy Assistance, money to
pay someone to drive me to Dr appts and so on. You can pay different
someones for different things
So there's some old gimped up hippie needing to find Rainbow Community
- And there's Rainbow folk looking to find ways to help create
maintain continue their Rainbow Community.
A friend Jeffrey Marshall was at the gather with me. Jeff's young
(35) has no arms, plays guitar with his feet, produces movies, played
wit a band in Prague for last 5 years, etc. Very talented. Also gets
lots of support money/services living in a subsidized apartment
building filled with disabled folk. In Denver, Housing authroity
seems to think all disabled folk want to live together in large
buildings. Folk like Jeff have lots of money spent on them by service
systems. I do money - I ran home health agencies - was a medicare/
medicaid. SSA consaultant, owned benefit mangement company anf other
such Babylon medical/socaiil service stuff..
I think it could be done better. Not thinking of a Rainbow Adult
Foster Care but rather an exiting intentional community (e.g.
artistic shared focus) that would add a capability to incorporate our
older family.
Just old heartsong/visions from a campfire at the gather....

Exactly. It's the art thing. I couldn't live like or with the status
quo when I was young and strong, but somehow the expectation is that I
can now? In fact, the reason I need so badly to move is that my
poetry and music have stopped in their tracks for a year due to the
oppressiveness of my housing. It's killing me. A person has to dream
or they die. Miranda- Hide quoted text -

Once a hippie - always a hippie. "I couldn't live like or with the
status quo when I was young and strong, but somehow the expectation is
that I can now." You nailed the issue perfectly.
It's all about quality of life. Wish we had some rainbow assist
community set up somewhere.
What benefit/support services do you qualify for?
Old Tom
The biggest obstacle to the success of such a facility, as I see it,
is location. While Miranda may be in Santa Cruz and would like to
stay in CA, another may be in say CO and would like to stay there. I
know I wouldn?t want to change doctors even though I?m not that big on
Redding, CA which came about more of happenstance than anything else.
Then there is the issue of SSI payments (SSDI or other) and medical
care changing from one location to another; all this is based on the
cost of living in the area with which one resides and the States
amount of assistance. Add to that if one should make the change and
find they?re no better off, you may not be able to get back to that
which you had. All said though, I?m please to see there is a
discussion on the topic as I?m getting there myself. Would this be
something I?d be interested in? Not sure, though I?m always willing
to help the family when ever I can.
