Arson suspected in Gathering Fire
Published: Wednesday, July 9, 2008 6:07 PM MDT
A wildland fire near the Rainbow Family Gathering in the southern Wind
River Range was caused by arson.
According to the Bureau of Land Management, on Monday at about 2:15
p.m. the fire was reported to Teton dispatch.
Because the fire was located north of Dutch Joe Creek near the Rainbow
Gathering, many resources were sent to the scene to contain the fire
as quickly as possible.
The U.S. Forest Service conducted the initial attack. The fire was
estimated at 3.5 acres.
Ten engines from the U.S. Forest Service, BLM and Sublette County; a
20-person crew called Snake River Hotshots, one helicopter and a three-
person helicopter responded to the Gathering 2 Fire.
No structures were threatened and no one was injured in the fire.
After is was determined that the fire was on BLM land, it was turned
over to the BLM Monday.
USFS and BLM law enforcement officers asked Rainbow Family Members
near adjacent camps to evacuate, but no voluntary or mandatory
evacuation orders were given.
As soon as the fire is contained, USFS engines will be released. BLM
and Sublette County crews will continue mop-up operations until the
fire is controlled.
A reward may be offered for information leading to the conviction of
any person for setting the fire. Anyone with information about this
fire should call 888-358-2310 .
