Re: r people becoming mean this rainbow board?

I hear what you are saying, and sympathize, but the situation in
Hawai'i is difficult. I'd rather that there be plenty of public land
where gathering was a-ok, but Hawai'i has almost no National Forests
like on the mainland. The gathering site we attempted on the beach
was rousted by potentially violent and seemingly iced-out locals. So,
we retreated to private property. Then we reached another major
crisis, a political one, and the owner of the property we retreated to
had to at least officially announce that no one new could come,
however, many did. Hopefully next year the Hawai'i gathering will be
much saner.

I don't think the problem is specifically related to private land--
but rather the particular parcel, and the degree of benign
dictatorship of the owner, and the strength of land use regs in the
area. Here in Hawai'i, it seems like ACCESSIBLE public land is either
jealously guarded by the DLNR or violent locals/homeless in the area.
Private property may be the only option, and hopefully we will not get
a "nobody new" situation again because we will have done our scouting
homework better.

Then there is the issue of non-accessible public land. I haven't
explored this much, and a hike-in or boat-in gathering may be possible
if a site like that can be scouted. The logistics are made very
difficult by the usual lack of fresh water springs in the lava rock.

I have never gotten beaten up in Hawai'i, even though I have done my
share of illegal camping, group and solo. With some care to avoid bad
situations, and a willingness to move on when the situation warrants,
violence here can almost always be avoided. That's why we had to move
the gathering.

The newly prevailing wisdom here in Hawai'i seems to be that gathering
on private land CAN be a good thing, especially if we want a situation
where we can better guarantee that a gathering will not get moved, and
we will have more recourse in the event we are threatened. This
assumes we can find willing landowners to host us, and this is far
from certain at this point.

Of course, on the US mainland, the situation is completely different,
and gatherings on private land do not make much sense-- at least for
as long as the USFS chooses to not enforce group use regs as strongly
as the law now allows.

Good luck!

kind,
i almost went to hawaii rainbow gathering offering, so close to going
i couldn't get any closer & it was a fraud, at some private land at
last day. where they asked no more to come, i could of been their on
my way thinking it was were it was planned on beach area, where public
is allowed to gather.

i went to another rainbow gathering their in 1995 i was asked to go
to. on the beach did happen & was great with healing. for i was headed
their for healing & went to 4 islands, but got beat up at least twice.
the islands are so small if you never been there you'll probably be
shocked. one hour to drive around big island. its as a prison there,
especially where honolulu is.

as any rainbow gathering i been to if its at people owned private
land, then it becomes wicked. beach gatherings in hawaii is possible
for state & county has much public beach, even where volcano goes off
has lots of space not near the volcanic eruptions.

just thought i'd share this, in case anyone thinks going to private
land for rainbow gatherings in the u.s.a. is kind, its cruelty.

so for a loving peaceful rainbow gathering please keep it to public
land, please.
kind
