truthout detailing stuff about various ISP's that censor emails based
on political leanings- shows what can be done about it etc.

When a person signs up to use a free email service they agree with its
term of service and this is in Yahoo's terms of service so I don't see
how this can be deemed censorship.

You acknowledge that Yahoo! may or may not pre-screen Content, but
that Yahoo! and its designees shall have the right (but not the
obligation) in their sole discretion to pre-screen, refuse, or remove
any Content that is available via the Service. Without limiting the
foregoing, Yahoo! and its designees shall have the right to remove any
Content that violates the TOS or is otherwise objectionable. You agree
that you must evaluate, and bear all risks associated with, the use of
any Content, including any reliance on the accuracy, completeness, or
usefulness of such Content. In this regard, you acknowledge that you
may not rely on any Content created by Yahoo! or submitted to Yahoo!,
including without limitation information in Yahoo! Message Boards and
in all other parts of the Service.

If a person isn't paying for their email account they get what they
get which is what they agreed to. While I'm not defending the
practice I recognize their right (the Service) to refuse to allow
anything they may find objectionable. Otherwise you're asking for
gov. intrusion and don't see how that's right. Say you had a server
Woody and there was a community type network of folks communicating
through the server and the gov. comes up to you and says you have to
allow these folks (people you fine objectionable) to use it as well.
I think I know you well enough to say you'd be pissed.

Are you sure this applies to emails and not "public content" on
message boards etc? Content that anyone can or might see is one thing,
but private emails are another. -w-

No, what I'm saying is, like in a restaurant you'll see a sign that
reads "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone", and this is
a public place similar to cyber space. He who owns the server should
be able to choice whose material passes through or is stored in its
system. Just because they offer a free service, shouldn't require
them to store in their database information they find objectionable.
I don't see it as a public or private matter but one of ownership.
There are those who post spam here on the agr and I think the majority
of this groups users would like to see it stop. I'm sure Google will
not allow it to stay in their data-banks once it's reported either.- Hide quoted text -

But this is public, not private email. If I email you something
personally, I don't believe it can be censored legally unless there is
some sort of complaint from the recipient (you). The TOS you posted
does not apply to email from what I read, but if I may have misread
it, so show me what you see. -w-

I see it in the first two sentences in that content is anything coming
in or going out, they may pre-screen. In the first sentence there's
the disclaimer of obligation so the user bares sole responsibility for
the content of their emails.
In the second sentence they reserve the right to remove anything they
deem inappropriate.

As follows:

You acknowledge that Yahoo! may or may not pre-screen Content, but
that Yahoo! and its designees shall have the right (but not the
obligation) in their sole discretion to pre-screen, refuse, or remove
any Content that is available via the Service. Without limiting the
foregoing, Yahoo! and its designees shall have the right to remove
any
Content that violates the TOS or is otherwise objectionable.

Another thing I don't understand is your insistence that somehow your
email account is private. If you read through the terms, even the
privacy policy your emails are anything but. Sure they may keep your
ID safe but your personal information is shared, big time. All your
habits and well if one of those habits happens to be say teen porn of
something of that nature you think they should just let it go. I'm
not equating Truth Out to such as this, quite the opposite I like
their work, but I'm not the owner of the service in question. They
have the right to draw the line wherever they choose. If Truth Out
wants everyone to get their newsletter let them assign a free email
account to all who would care to sign-up.

Chuck

PS I, like you, have more than one email account. Privacy you pay for.- Hide quoted text -

I agree about the "content" that is on their servers, which to me
means it is available to the public, but I still believe that it does
not apply to emails which are not public, except that if there are
attachments which could be pre-screened. -w-
