Here are 11 solutions already being put into practice by innovative
communities around the world.
- snip -
1. What if women -- the majority of the world's farmers -- could
resist the commercialization of agriculture and strengthen food-
centered economies?
Yeah, what if? Does not affect status quo.
Throw out silly idea.
2. What if poor rural families were given land so that they could grow
their own food?
Will this happen outside Brazil? And how long will it last there?
3. What if Indigenous Peoples' collective rights were recognized,
ending the attack on those who have managed and maintained the world's
most delicate ecosystems for millennia?
Recognition is not the same as action. Does not affect status quo.
Throw out silly idea.
4. What if economic policies recognized that preserving the
environment was more important than obtaining fossil fuels?
Will only happen when gumint-issue gas masks run out.
5. What if governments valued people's happiness over economic
growth?
Didn't happen in the last millennium. Up to us to make it happen in this
one.
6. What if genuine democracy -- the precondition for policies that
benefit people over profits -- were to flourish?
Ever hopeful.
7. What if we could redress the forced impoverishment of the Global
South?
Hahahhahaaaa....!
8. What if climate change could be stopped?
With Travolta as the winged angel who will do it?
9. What if governments realized that striving for limitless economic
growth is not a solution, but a cause of poverty and ecological
collapse?
Those governments wouldn't last a month.
10. What if we saw the need to de-industrialize our societies as an
opportunity, not a crisis?
Try prying shoppers out of the gap this season. Hard to figure for those who
are all lost in the supermarket and can no longer shop happily.
11. What if a critical mass of people the world over realized the need
for urgent action?
Nice idea. hope to live to see it.
Don't mean to be negative but the drawing board looks grim at the moment.
In any case, Happy Halloween!
