Sheesh... I been reading this thread and nobody has mentioned the magic
word yet. Can you say "OCR"? It stands for "Optical Character
Recognition".

See, the scanner takes a piece of paper and turns it into an -image-.
If you give it a page of text, all the scanner "sees" is an -image-.
The scanner is just dumb hardware. OCR takes that image and looks for
text -- characters -- words. Without OCR software, you need a
secretary. Even -with- OCR, you will need one, because it takes time to
feed the scanner page after page. And it's a pretty sure thing that
unless you are scanning quality printing, there will be a bunch of
correcting to be done, as the OCR software makes mistakes.

Maybe your scanner came with OCR software. Since you didn't say what
kind of scanner you have, ... ( it NEVER hurts to tell people what
kind of a thing you have when you're asking people what to do with that
thing)
