I left out something important about that survey.
These 4 students made up the statements themselves as a group. Which
means that the brainwashing was already in their heads, and not being
fed to them by a professor with an agenda.
I tried picking their brains about the nature of the assignment. I've
been trying to figure out what it could have been. You know how group
assignments work sometimes.. they will give one assignment, and when
that's done, they will take the results and have you do something else
with that.
So I'm guessing that maybe it was to come up with a proposition they
wanted to debate, and make 3 variations of it, and do a little survey
to see which one version was most defendable. So like maybe they all
agreed on the premise that there's too much negative news, and just
wanted to see the best way to approach it.
I can see that if it were a debate class, where you have to defend some
topic whether you believe it or not. But this was an English class
they said, and they couldn't explain the assignment.
And yes, this is Idaho, and yes, there is a lot of authoritarian
brainwashing in the Southern part of the state. The north is way
different, and there was a huge movement to split the territory before
statehood. The south is heavily Mormon. Go figure.
But pretty typical for Boise State. It's a football college. When I
first moved here, I had hoped to continue my newly discovered path as a
research flunkie. Good way to go to college without all the mickey
mouse. In Hawaii, I'd worked on a couple of grant projects that were
way fun. But Boise State -- whew. The architecture says it all.
Everything is brick. All right angles. All very orderly. Lots of Kens
and Barbies. Hardly any older students. Hardly any hippies. All the
blacks are athletes, or from Africa. Your basic diploma mill. BSU. B.S.
You. Go Broncos! Yay team!
So when a local jock hero gets into a road rage race with a local
nobody, leading to a crash that kills a family of three, the local
nobody sits in jail on 3 counts of manslaughter, while the jock gets
charged with leaving the scene of an accident, and gets to keep playing
football. Coach says he hopes it will help him heal.
