I could pay that. Is this one of those slim, lighweight types? (My IBM is like 2-3 inches thick.)
The one I am using is about 1.75 inches thick... it's about 4.8 lbs... so it is fairly light compared to most.
We have free sites right in town here; one in the park outside my work, and at various coffeehouses, etc.
There is also Boingo which is one of the top wireless hotspot companies.

The old computer will hook up to the cable modem and cable. That'll be my husband's main computer then. The new laptop will be mine. It'll be in the same room as the other, using the same Internet cable connection. (Choosing a laptop is so I can easily move it to another room to do non-Internet work;
Funny you should mention that... I just unplugged and went from the livinroom to the bedroom... I was just thinking how cool it was to unplug and walk around with my laptop and not lose the connection.
I just picked up the contract here in San Antonio to put wireless Internet in to all of the Applebee's here.
also take it with me on trips to watch movies, etc.)
I plan on taking mine to Colorado this November... although I have yet to find a wireless hotspot where I'm going.
It sounds like you're saying wireless router is not a good choice.
Unless you know how to secure your network or have someone handy that knows how it can be unsafe.
How else to connect both computer to 'net at same time?
Wired router using CAT5 cable... this can be a hassle as you would not be able to unplug at will.
When I was living with John & Rose we had 3 computers in the house and I ran nearly 200 feet of CAT5 hooking up a network... now that I have wireless it' great.
Should I just get another cable modum?
Nope, 1 modem is all you need.
The way they connect is:
- Cable into modem (through the coax cable) - CAT5 cable from modem to router
Then from there you hook up the computers from the router whether they are wireless or wired.
I'm thinking laptop might be the way to go, mostly for the portability.
Try to get a carrying case with whatever you buy... or if you have a heavy duty backpack that will work.
My last few have been through Dell, and I'd been advised to go through them for this purchase. You think not; hmmmmm
Nope, and understand that I have many friends that work at DELL in Austin... my serious prolem with DELL is that they are Pentium dependant... Pentiums suck (IMO)... they freeze up, they overheat, they run tooooo sssslllloooowwww.
AMD is better by far... and you will never find a DELL with an AMD in it... PLUS, Pentiums run anywhere from $150-300 more than an AMD system... and why ?? becuz as like with DELL you are paying for the name and not how good or bad the product is.
One of those friends thought that it would be funny to sign me up to get DELL circulars... so every couple of months I get these things in the mail.
Thanks for the input. I don't know enough to know what questions to ask.
You'll figure it out.
I'll print these replies and try to figure it all out.
There should be geeks around you that can help.
