some do both at the same time, most of the newer motorhomes have that set
up, works as a charger and switches over to a inverter.heres a place to find

charges the batteries fine when the generaotr runs, never had a problem dry
camping all last winter, and have used the system a few times up here when
the power was out. a little spendy but handles the load when neccessary.
ands a fine invwstment.
this last winter i set up gypsy traveler with a small solar set up , hope
its doing its job for thier bus. spiritrising
