There was a time in WoW when you could change your gear as long as you
were out of combat. This was *incredibly* overpowered for PvP
purposes. So much so that Blizzard made a specific patch to remove it,
sometime during arena season 2, I believe.
It was abused in two ways:
1. A hybrid class could swap gear depending upon the opposing team
make up. Need more healing? Have your ret pally swap to holy gear.
Facing an all melee team? Have your arms warrior put on tanking gear.
2. Resistance gear made certain classes impotent. Facing a warlock?
Shadow resistance. Facing a mage? Frost resistance. 300 resist or so
was around a 50% damage reduction, and more importantly, a 50%
resistance to crowd control effects, which allowed you to steamroll
over any team with a shadow priest, warlock, or mage.
I don't PvP much - is there a restriction of some sort in (say)
arenas? Because I use the (native Blizzard UI) equipment manger to
swap gear all the time when I'm out of combat, according to the needs
of the situation; I'm not aware that I've ever been prevented from
doing so.
GW2 "respec any time" sounds more like allowing you the equivalent of
completely respeccing your WoW talent build before each and every
fight in an instance, if that's what you want. In GW1 you only have a
limited number of the spells that you know available at any one time
(you may know 30 or 40 different spells, but at any one time you'll
have no more than 8 - of which only 1, moreover, can normally be a
top-notch, "elite" skill), and you can only change those when you're
in town. So constantly tweaking your spec (and/or that of any NPC
"heroes" accompanying you) for whatever you think you're about to go
up against is a *big* part of the game.
