Seriously what were you thinking trying to kill cata mobs in resto spec and
wotlk quest gear?

I wasn't thinking. I quested very little from 15 to 80 as I levelled purely
in /lfg. Now I can't enter Cata dungeons before upgrading my gear so I have
to quest. The little questing I did from 15 to 80 was mostly done in resto
spec without being unduly difficult, hence I just started questing in resto
spec in Hyjal, too.

I have levelled at least 4 chars in cata with only wotlk quest gear and all
those chars were in pure dps spec and even like that it was hard (untill I
got half way through mount hijal). My warrior that was 2 shotting mobs with
his arms spec in wotlk got to mount hijal with 17k health, with 1 mob I was
at 50% HP or less with 2 mobs I would barely survive (and sometimes die).

I see, my two other chars that I levelled past 80 (SV hunter and aff
warlock) didn't find it all that hard, another reason why I didn't think to
switch to my off spec.

I cant imagine anyone kill mobs in cata with any level of gear without a
dps spec.

Hehe, that's what I found out and I'll certainly switch to my dps spec when
I next try.

So, a quick update.

Last night I went to the AH and spent 750g on iLvl 289 greens (mail, leather
and cloth). That easily brought my average iLvl up to queue for BC and ToT.

I then spent some time spending talent points in my secondary spec (Ele).

Ported to Hyjal, listed myself in /lfg and started questing. Wooot, I am
three shotting mobs that took me a minute to kill before. I guess the
combination of the massively better gear and the dps spec really do make a
difference :-)

After about 5 minutes I got placed in ToT. As the window popped up right
during a fight I first killed the two mobs beating on me and moved to a safe
place for my return from the dungeon. By that time the times had moved low
enough that I couldn't switch spec before accepting. So I got into the
dungeon and said "Hi, just a sec, switching spec and mana", then did just
that. By the time I had switched spec the tank had already pulled, I drank
enough mana to run after them and heal him just before dying, luckily he was
level 84 and had about 102k health. I then drank more between the next few
pulls until I was at full mana.

Healing was not quite trivial but easy. I had no mana problems whatsoever
but noticed that my heals were smaller in relation to the large health bars
(something I expected from reading other cata healing threads).

We get to the first boss (the naga lady). All went fine until the adds
spawn. The roam freely and of course start beating on me. I put Gift of the
Naaru and Riptide on myself and decide to spend the Healing Surge on the
tank instead of me but die. I resurract using my Ankh and just save the tank
before he karks it only to die again seconds later. While I lay there one of
the mages tells me to "Ankh!!!!" to which I reply that I had already died
twice. The response from the mage was "in this fight?" and the tank's only
comment is "wtf". They still take her down. As nobody else can rezz I want
to release but notice that the popup box is gone. The DK has made me a
zombie. I can't get rid of the right clicking on the buff icon. I've had
this problem due to taints (I suspect Talented is the guilty addon) so I
tell them I need to relog. Only to find I still can't click it off. Then I
notice I have a possession bar and explode. I just lay there dead but still
can't release my spirit. When I tell them the only comment I get is
"grouping with pros" and they pull the next boss. I relog again but still
can't release. I am just about to tell them this and to suggest that I leave
the group. While I type this, I am kicked from the group.

Nice start to Cata healing. Not. I already see scenarios of me ditching my
healer and not bothering again.

Despite this I try again. I get placed in BC almost instantly. I tell the
group that this is my frist attempt at healing a Cata instance (something
the previous group didn't give me time to say). Their response was "just
heal :-)" which I thought was promising. While we run up to the first pull,
the mage whispers me, telling me to ES and keep Riptide up. When I tell him
that I have been healing since level 15 but that this was just me first Cata
instance he replies with "ah, you'll be fine then".

And I was. This group were all 80 and 81 characters (unlike the last which
was 84, 82, 83, 82 and me at 80) and I'm mildly afraid as the tank had a
significantly lower HP pool. But things went fine. I lost the mage once, but
otherwise all went well. Before the last boss I want to pick up the
"floating" quest and when walking across it pull a group we skipped. I say
"sorry, I pulled" and the whole group returns and we save the day, despite
the fact that they had already pulled the next trash group. I appologise
again but they all say it's fine. I ding 81 half way through the instance.

After the last boss is down, we requeue and are placed in ToT. I'm torn
between fright from my first experience and hope after how well BC went. It
turns out, things go well here, too. We easily down the first boss, before
the fight the warlock said "I'll take the left add, mage take the right" and
all went fine. On the second boss I hardly need to heal, I turn my head once
to wave goodnight to the wife and when I look back 2 seconds later the tank
is dead. I appologise for not having paid attention and put ES on the
paladin who picks up the boss smoothly. Then one moment he is at 100% and
the next he is dead. Still, with the mage and warlock we bring the boss down
to 40% when the warlock goes from 100 to 0 and shortly after the mage and I
are dead, too. I asked WTF had happened and learnt about Shadow Fissure (not
something I was concerned about when doing DPS with my hunter a few months
ago). It seems the bear tank didn't know about it either, because on the
next try he dies on the first fissure again, but this time the pally is
quick on his feet and we only loose him on the last one. With the boss at 4%
the warlock, mage and I manage to take him down. The tank asks for advice on
how to avoid the fissure and we amiably discuss whether running through the
boss would work or not. No consesus is found but we continue.

We easily finish the rest of the instance, and call it a night after having
a lot of fun.

So, I'll keep healing in Cata and will put the first group in the "exception
PUG" basket of nightmares.

Thanks to everyone for your tips about buying gear from the AH and the DPS
spec, that really helped. I've already replaced 4 or 5 of those bought items
with iLvl 308 blues and only have 1 piece each of cloth and leather, the
rest is now all mail gear.

Cheers
