It's a classic test of self control. In a nutshell, the "marshmallow
test" was done on a group of 4 year old kids. They were given one
marshmallow, and told that they would be left alone for 15 minutes. If
the marshmallow was still there, they'd get a second marshmallow.
About one third of the kids managed to delay gratification and got two
marshmallows.
The original study itself was only mildly interesting. The really
interesting bits were when they followed up with the same kids during
their senior year in high school. Something crazy like all of the two
marshmallow kids got accepted into college, but less than a third of
the one marshmallow kids got accepted into college.
