The main disadvantage of such an approach is faction reputation.

There is that. My main will be exalted with all Cata factions soon enough
(except for Ramkahen which I'll need to support using the tabard once
Earthen Ring is all set, those dailies just are not enough :-). That should
at least let me supply my /lfg alts with shoulder and head enchants. They
will lack the other exalted-faction items, though. I might resort to
questing for certain factions that have good items for resto shaman and bear
tanks, if I ever get them to 85 :)

One thing to watch out for, unless it's being since been "fixed", is
that the head enchants while BoA, still required revered with the
appropriate faction for the character to be able to place it on their
helmet.
And I believe the shoulder enchants from the rock dudes on Deepholm
aren't even BoA.
