Tides is the only heroic I have tanked so far, but in this case we had a
similar problem with my healer going OOM quite fast in the first phase
UNTIL I convinced him to dispell the debuff directly. It seems that the
fire debuff thing does a huge amount of damage, causing a dispell, as
expensive as it is, to be the more mana efficient way to keep the tank
alive. At least, once he kept dispelling the debuffs, we one-shotted the
fight (though mana still was close at the end, which is probably a
function of gear). Another factor in this fight in particular is group
damage. If done correctly there should be almost no damage taken from
anyone but the tank. Yell at your groupmates for slacking on interrupts
and avoiding stuff on the ground.
Yeah. On at least one of the attempts I had to Cleanse that debuff off
the Mage, as well as the Rogue. Don't ask me how that happens.
I swear, I don't know what it is about that fight, but I literally
miss one timing of a heal, and the tank is dead. And then when we wipe
and I run back, I always check Recount's Death Log. Melee swing,
melee. Earth shards. Earth shards. Melee. I can't heal this.
All in all, as a paladin tank who has lost the ability to dispell magic
myself, I realise that quite a few healers do not remove debuffs as much
as I would like. I think (never really been a healer myself) that in the
WotLK model with frantic healing to prevent fast tank deaths, they maybe
were never really able to spare the GCD. However, with the new healing
model as I understand it, dispells are a quite mana efficient way to
prevent the damage in the first place.
I understand that the concept behind Cata healing was that damage was
supposed to be less severe, and that "triage" was supposed to happen.
But honestly I am finding that, especially in some trash mobs/boss
fights, tanks are getting cranked just as hard as in Wrath. I stop to
think, "Now, golly gee. What heal would be best suited to cast here?",
and someone is dead. Interestingly, in Wrath, I always had time to
Cleanse stuff. Not so much in Cata.
One place I hate is Grim Batol, the mobs with one Gronn and three
Twilight Beguilers. They cast Deceitful Blast, which hits for Shadow
Damage, then applies a stacking DoT. And with three of them active,
they can stack Blasts faster than I can Cleanse them. I have one.
Cleanse. 3,200 mana. Tanks gets it. 3,200 mana. DPS gets it. 3,200
mana. So far we're up to almost 10,000 mana . . . and I still need to
heal the tank, who is getting cranked by that Gronn, whose damage is
no joke in Heroic mode.
I know, I know, DPS should be interrupting, but I can't make people do
their jobs.
