It was(is? I dunno if the quest is even still around much less still
required), but leveling First Aid is far from mandatory. I did it on my
warlock for achievement purposes(including the 500 FW bandages or w/e it
was), but none of my other characters have leveled it past I dunno, 200 or
so, and several of them I don't think have even learned it at all(the shaman
didn't, don't think the DK did either). Okay, I suppose STV isn't mandatory
either, but locking questing out of a whole zone seems a bit bigger deal to
me than locking out First Aid...
