More detailed response (hopefully):

Thanks. After I wrote my venting-post I went and googled some more and
found another site which explains pretty much the strategy you outline
below. It seems the one I found first (only planting 5 instead of 10
sunflowers) was good enough for the first four but not the fifth quest.

Ghouls move slow, so don't panic if 1-2 of them spawn and you have no
defenses :-) Get at least 2 sunflowers up, if a ghould is more than
2-3 squares in, then stick a rocknut in front of it; that'll hold it a
while. Plant another sunflower, then put a spitter on the 2nd ghoul.
and then if you can, get a 4th sunflower down. By this time, you'll
have enough solar power coming in that planting spitters and rocknuts
becomes much easier!

I tend to stick spitters first on the rows that rocknuts aren't on,
then plant then on the rocknut rows when the nut's nearly broken, if
I'm struggling to get all defenses up - a good row of rocknuts is the
best form of defense, but I think they have a cooldown (can't remember
100%, been playing the Popcap version and that's confused me :-P) so
you can't plant them all instantly. Generally I go for the following
in columns:

1: Sunflowers
2: Sunflowers
3 Spitters
4: Spitters
5: Freezias
6: Rocknuts
7: Tentacles

Columns 4 and 7 are lowest priority, usually I'll prioritise them as
1, 6, 3, 2, 5 if that makes sense, obviously planting where most
required. So long as you've got a rocknut and one spitter or freezia,
or a freezia+spitter in a row, a single ghoul is no issue, multiples
are tougher and will require 2 damaging plants and a nut ideally. But
the amount of damaging/defensive things you can plant is wholly
dependent on your sunflowers, so plant them asap! I made the mistake
of only running with one row at first, failed dismally, then checked
wowhead and found 2 rows is recommended... aha! Worked perfectly ever
since; that tactic holds good for the Popcap game too, so far as I've
played it ;-)

When I'm done questing for the tree form pet I'll go back to hillsbrad and
retry.

Thanks a lot
Urbin
