I can't see any spam threads. Perhaps your news provider doesn't filter
away even extremely obvious spam?
I'm guessing a lot of us here browse AGW at work - I do, anyway - and
the only way I can view the newsgroup at work is using Google Groups
(I never browse AGW at home because, hey, I'm home now. I don't want
to read about the game; I want to play it :P).
Google Groups, apparently, has *zero" spam filters. And, boy howdy,
has the spam gotten bad. It used to be the newsgroup was spammed for a
few days, then was fine for a few months. But this latest infestation
is just getting worse. GG keeps a list of threads with the most recent
replies down the right-hand side, but even that now is full of spam,
so I can't see who's responded to what. What's worse is when people
respond to spam or to obvious troll posts because then those threads
get bumped rather than ones about WoW.
[WTB] better news provider at work.

Jill - I'll give it to you easy (and don't take that the wrong way! - lol)

1)  download free newsreader Mozilla Thunderbird.  If you can't at work,
download the setup file at home, and put it on a flash drive - then
bring it in.

The flash drive will get scanned, reported to my manage and Mozilla
Thunderbird possibly de-installed.

Possible - It all depends on your company....Mine is locked down pretty
tight on web browsing, but not so much on others.  I can't even search
for grinding wheels (legitimate work related) because Barracuda thinks
I'm shopping. lol  I can't get to Google groups as I get locked out from
all forums and groups.  However, I can get in this way.  I was only
giving her this alternate method, as it seems as if she can get to
google groups through her company internet, maybe they are a bit less
stringent in other areas too.

We've got loads of things blocked too. Although the blocking can be a
bit odd and random.

I assume Google groups has a valid work reason, so it allowed. Same
with some other forums, the fact they have a "Games" section is
overlooked.

Of course, this is all moot if she doesn't have rights on her work PC to
install a program anyway..  :)

Most people here don't but I do! But they still send me emails and
auto de-install stuff not approved.

And like I said if you plug in a USB device it gets scanned and
reported if it finds anything not approved. So, no charging your iPod/
iPhone via your PC.

6)  your NNTP server name is: news.eternal-september.org  and the port
s/b: 119   Your newsreader is now set up.

And how does it get through the corp-firewall?

Again, mine's obviously not blocked as this is how this message is being
posted, so maybe hers isn't either...

Just giving her an alternate method to connect and avoid spam..  :)

If you want more WoW at work try Google Reader for RSS feeds and
blogs!
