I've just received a mail from blizzard telling me that the application
process for cata beta signup has started. As far as I can tell, it looks
legit. I won't follow the link in the mail but will check the battle net
page.

Well, I checked the link they claimed had more information but typing
http://battle.net/cataclysm in my browser just lead to a page not found
error.

After that I had a second look at the mail headers and it turns out the mail
wasn't sent to my battle.net mail address after all but to the one I
registered at wow-infterface on which I have been getting a lot of wow
phishing mails lately. I must have been sloppy doing my first check :)

As a change I have to admit though, that it looks very "proper" (good
grammar, no outrageous claims about alleged wrongdoings), I seem to remember
that I got a mail before BC or WotLK about registering for the beta pool,
they might just have dug up that old mail and re-used it in order to make it
look as legit as possible.

Anyway, if you get one of these mails, don't follow the link :)

Yeah was going to say, I've had a few of those which are not real, but
you already found it out :-) There was a genuine one 2-3 months before
Cataclysm beta started, telling people to register for the pool, but
I've had none since then - I believe people who get chosen will get
one, but it'll only tell them they can get the info from battle.net,
and leave people to find the link themselves - for us it's
eu.battle.net and then login to account management :-)
