You found the exit, not the entrance. The entrance is in the small town,
whose name I can't remember, but it's only a hundred or two hundred
yards away. IIRC to the northeast of the exit, hidden inside a building.
The huge steps prevents characters from entering the DeadMines via that
route, but they can leave just fine, once they have killed Van Cleef (or
possibly if they give up and decided to flee; I think that can be done too).
I can't give you the coordinates for the entrance, since I'm not
subscribing right now, but they should be fairly easy to find via
WoWwiki, Thottbot or similar. Also, the actual instance doesn't start
immediately inside the entrance, there's a kind of normal dungeon first
where you can kill some Defias miners. IIRC they're non-elite so you can
perhaps solo them. As for solo'ing the DeadMines themselves, I tried
briefly with a level 35-or-so character long ago, and it didn't work
well. By the time you can solo the Mines, all the mobs will be very,
very grey (which means no XP for killing them).

Ah. I see.
Thats why Carbonite was showing me the instance as being in the small
town. Couldnt find the entrance though...
