Need on BoE?

If some nice BoE gear should drop in an instance which clearly is an
upgrade to my current gear, is it considered as rude or ninjaing to
roll "need"? Should I ask the group if it is OK for me to roll need on
the item?

It hasn't happened, yet - I am just asking beforehand, you know, just
to be on the safe side :-)
