Now and again I might get curious why something went wrong and try to
figure it out for my own satisfaction, but I make that a choice. Not
like customers who all too often don't have backups, or the backup is
patchy at best.

Well - I better not start a tirade on backing up - I'll only bore
everyone to death :-D

Hehe regarding backing up I always laugh at my boyfriend for never
having any backups... he's an IT engineer and always telling his
customers to make them! Admittedly part of his job is getting data off
dead pcs, so if anything does go wrong he does have the knowhow to
rescue it but I'd still think it easier to just have the backup to
begin with lol. I personally don't back up as often as I should;
intend to do it every 2 weeks or so but it ends up more like every
month or two... but at least I do have a backup so won't lose much if
anything goes horribly wrong!

Sounds like you need a set and forget solution - I rather like CrashPlan
<http://www.crashplan.com> which will backup to a local drive, another
computer across your LAN or the Internet, or to online storage you can
pay for.

Ideally you want both onsite (for convenience so you can restore fast)
and offsite backup (for security in case your house burns down, for
example), but at the very least have offsite.

CrashPlan can be set to only run at certain times and/or when you're
away from your computer, it's network usage can be throttled, and even
when it is running it's CPU and disk usage has minimal impact on your
work IME.

Interesting idea but the first thing I see on the website is
charges... paying monthly for something I can easily do for free is
stupidity when I have very little spare cash anyway. I'll stick with
my usual way - thanks for the suggestion though.

The free version works for daily backups to your own HD or other LAN or
internet connected computer. The paid versions offer continuous backup,
agmonst other things. Plus you can pay for online backup storage space
if you don't have a second location or a willing friend or family member
elsewhere for offsite backup.

Anyway - my point is you don't have to spend a cent (assuming you
already have enough storage space at each location - and I grant you may
need to buy some HDs if you don't) to backup onsite and offsite with
CrashPlan.

Ah ok, wasn't an obvious mention of a free version so I didn't read
further. Either way, i don't see a need for it, when I can do it fine
myself.

It does say free twice on the intro page I linked to, but nevermind
about that. You said you often didn't get around to backing up for up to
a month, which is why I suggested it. But if an automated system is not
to your liking, please don't make your IT guy or gal cry by forgetting
to backup and losing data :-) We're sensitive creatures, you know
*exaggerated fragile-looking smile* *mows down some noobs with a wave of
plasma fire in Quake 3*

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
