Well, purple gems cost NO gold if you PvP. 10k honor will get any purple gem

True, you can buy the purples with PvP honor & thus they don't cost
gold. But Cardinal Rubies & Kings Ambers sell for ~180 on my server,
so there's an indirect cost.

My point was only that I wouldn't use that nice of a gem in a piece of
gear that I expect to not keep for a reasonably long time. I'd either
keep the gem for in my bank for later use, or sell the gem, buy a
cheap gem for my soon-to-be-replaced gear piece, and pocket the 175g.
