Just take some time to play the AH game and you should be fine.

At level 42 I have about 1200G on my Night Elf Hunter. And I spent 1000G
on (the totally worthless) dual spec, plus money for 2 mounts, skilling etc.
I have no gathering professions and use an unlevelled alt male slave
just for the AH.

I started out selling clam meat and crawler's claw for 2Gxstack. It's
surprising how much people is going to pay for things that you believe
to be totally worthless. Of course you need auctioneer to know that.

To get my 1st mount i just made my alt buy great horned owl and hawk owl
for 50s (the vendor is just behind the Ah in darnassus) and auction them
for 2G. Sold every one of them really fast, usually 4/5 x day. It's a 6G
gain without effort.
If you're in Arathi, search the giant gray spiders, loot the Spider's
Silk they drop (10% drop rate) and sell it. It goes for 3G each on my
server.

I'm not going to say this advice is right or wrong - I'm just going to say
that you can't blindly follow any advice you see, either here or on any of
WoW economy blogs. Every server economy is different, as we periodically
demonstrate here in a.g.w with discussions about making money with
disenchanting, etc.

Pick up ideas wherever you want, but be sure to take the time to do the
homework in your own AH before you throw money away.

Now that is certainly good advice :-) Whether you do it manually or use
a mod like Auctioneer, take careful note of what's selling on your
server, because I think all the long time players here can attest to the
sometimes wide variance in prices between servers.

Plus value isn't just a mod's or your own guess as to an item's profit
margin. If said item is only selling once in a blue moon it may not be a
good deal at all. Some epics LOOK like they'd make you a bunch of gold,
but I'm still trying to sell some that are months old (drops - I didn't
make the mistake of buying them)... Note how many times and how often an
item is selling before you spend gold on it.

Correct.
I just meant to say that you have to take the time to play the AH game
if you want the money to afford mounts etc. It's easy, and can be fun.
Some people take levelling as a full-time job, to the point they're
not fully enjoying the game.
