I never included soul drain into my rotation because my bags kept
filling up with shards, so only very rarely use it anymore. But have
done some playing around on my lock to try and include it in, and it
definitely has it's benifits, particulary the mana return bit -
however, still end up with a bucket load of shards.
On a side note, why the heck won't blizz change soul shards so they
are stackable??? Then I (and I assume lots of other people) wouldn't
have this problem.

There are some Addons to manage warlock shards (and stones, and summons, and ...)
Like eeShards, Necrosis, Necronomicon
