BSing is considered one of the 2 best prof's in the game for raiding and high end play, as you get the ability to add sockets to your bracers and gloves. It shouldn't be that expensive though if you picked mining to go with it...

Really, neither. Neither of them offer any major benefit. Both require a significant effort to actually specialize. The long term benefit for Blacksmithing is just the two extra sockets.

There are a couple of BoP items available, but they are iLevel 175 rare items and are quickly and easily replaced at level 80.

Armorsmithing is *significantly* more expensive to acquire than weaponsmithing. So much so that it is cheaper to specialize in weaponsmithing and then switch specialization to armorsmithing if that's what you really want. There are a whole bunch of mithiril level (40-50) plans that you will miss out on, but unless you are trying to collect all possible plans you won't care about these.
