I also tend to growl at the people who I buff that can but don't buff
back. For example, sitting at a dock waiting for a boat, I throw a
int buff with my mage on a priest. Who then just sits there...doesn't
respond in any fashion, even when the boat comes and he runs on
it...or just spins and looks at me. Feel like saying "Have some extra
mana for the next half hour...some extra health sure would be nice."
Maybe s/he took a bathroom break or let the dog in/out while waiting for the
boat. Many's the time I've noticed after the fact that someone buffed me.
To go through the combat text to figure out who did me the service is
something maybe I *could* do, but is it something I *should* do?
Bear in mind that a lot of people might tab out while waiting for the
boat, and may very well not notice the extra buff that's appeared - I
probably do that lots of times because I tabbed out while waiting, then
just run onto the boat and it's only some time later that I notice
somebody's buffed me several minutes earlier, by which time I have no
clue who it was.
Exactly.
Another thing: I used to help other players far more than I do now, having
adopted more of a laissez faire attitude. I have, in the past, helped
members of my own faction and the opposing faction only to receive a /rude
emote. I was asked, once, to please stop helping two low levels attempting
to kill Hogger when he was more challenging than he is right now. And I
know that I often resent someone else stepping in to "aid" me in a fight
that I was winning, or trying out some new ability to see how effective it
is only to have some higher level player one-shot the mob.
If I'm on a healer alt, I will heal, but I don't usually help in the actual
fight. I buff when I can, and I still help with a battle when it seems that
a corpse run is the inevitable outcome for another player, but I no longer
Just Do It. I've been buffed while in the midst of battle only to have the
other player demand buffs in return even while I'm still concentrating on
fighting several mobs.
As far as I'm concerned, nobody owes me *anything* if I buff them. It takes
little effort, usually costs me nothing in game sacrifice, and is something
I do if I think of it -- and remember what alt I'm playing at the time.
(Heck, I've been alternating between a rogue and a druid lately, and I
sometimes don't put thorns and call of the wild on **myself** for the first
hour or two of play!) I try to thank/return buff other players, but it's
not always possible.
Now where did this soap box come from?
