You're not alone. I had to ask the devs in IRC to understand this.

The built-in AH interface does the search on the server. It's pretty bare-
bones because it wants to make the query simple, to reduce server load. All
you can ask is at the top of the Browse tab.

Auctioneer includes a much more sophisticated search system, but it can't
ask the server to do that kind of search. The server doesn't know how. So
Auctioneer searches the last scan data (downloaded to your computer) that
you collected. You need to have recent scan data for the search to be
useful. And remember that you can only use the "fast scan" feature once
every 15 minutes.
