The presumption was that you're already in the Barrens, and from there it's
much faster to go straight west through Stonetalon. You don't have to go
through Sun Rock. Just go through the Charred Vale. You're not saved from
that by taking the Ashenvale tunnel.

But if you didn't start in the Barrens (eg. from taking a boat from Booty
Bay to Ratchet), then the tunnel is indeed faster.

BTW, Astranaar is the main Alliance town in the zone of Ashenvale.
