I'm pretty sure I trained them, just never found one worth keeping.
And I *certainly* don't remember having a throwing knife at level 1,
unless I *did* swap it for a bow or a gun, but I was pretty sure the
ranged weapon slot was still empty until I found the vendor in
Zangermarsh.

Well the answer there is don't throw them out if there isn't one already
in your slot ;-) They have use for pulling even if they have no slots,
so *any* ranged weapon is better than none! You definitely start with
one at lvl 1, every rogue I've ever made has a throwing knife then, it
may be that you used it up if you levelled your rogue in the days when
it was a stack of knives instead of a single one, but all you had to do
is go to the nearest general goods vendor and there's more ;-) Bows and
guns above lvl 40ish all have stats on too so you really should've been
using one by then, usually a few on the AH that are cheap enough. Or
also on the AH you can often find lvl 15 throwing knives with +2
strength, not the best rogue stat but not bad for the lvl, made by
blacksmiths.

*Spend* money at the AH?!? Heaven forbid ;-)
