Omen is very useful for a healer. Not so much for tracking your own
threat, but for noticing that the mage is being an aggromonkey and
perilously close to pulling the boss off, and being prepared for that just
in case. (The fact that the mage is pulling aggro is another problem to
address, but in the middle of the fight, being able to prepare for people
doing stupid things and recover through them is part of learning to become
the machine.)
Omen is completely unnecessary.
I say that as a raider who has cleared all 25 man, non-hard mode
content, who is working on the Ulduar hard mode achievements.
All a healer (or tank) needs is a raid UI (like Grid) that highlights
players with aggro. All a dps player needs is to watch their portrait
- if their portrait lights up red, they need to back down on aggro
(this behavior is built into the default UI).
Those two things can, and do, completely replace Omen. I think that
only 4-5 people in my guild still use Omen.
By the way, if the mage is attacking the correct target, and is about
to pull aggro, it's a tanking problem. Either the tank is extremely
undergeared compared to the mage, or the tank is bad. There is no
third option.
