Pft. I don't much care. It's wrong in the WoW universe, as far as I'm
concerned. But to those without any stitch of decency or morality, I'm
sure it's just fine. Luckily, Blizzard appears to have decided to take
a stand against a banal human evil in this case.
Capitalism is a banal human evil?
The problem is, this is a game, and the counter to it (having all sorts ofpeople drop their professions and go nuts on mining or whatever to cash
in), followed by the inevitable and horrible crash, isn't most people's
idea of fun. Save that kind of thing for real economic simulations, and
just let us have some fun. *
It takes large chunks of the game economy and holds them hostage to
one greedy rich ***'s whim, preventing many players who need those
commodities from being able to afford them, a large percentage of whom
likely have no other reasonable avenue of aquiring them in any timely
fashion. Result, a large number of frustrated players have reduced fun
and enjoyment from the game, so that one greedy *** can be very
happy. Blizzard made the right call, on that one.
If we were talking about food, I might buy the "need" - but these are
pixels. In a game. If someone is cornering the market by buying all the
ore and listing it at insane prices, roll a miner and list yours 10% less -
you'll either be doing someone else a favor, or taking money from that evil
capitalist ***.
It's supply and demand - the same reason some old world and Outland raw
materials are selling for more than their Northrend equivalents. No one
wants to bother going to get their own. I've got 3 herbalists @ 450; when
I need pigments for my scribe, I run by the AH and buy 4-5 stacks of
whatever herb has the best pigment:gold ratio. Not because it's impossible
for me to get my own, but because I value that half hour of play time on an
alt more than 20g.
It's entirely possible to go 1-80 without ever buying anything at the AH.
You can level any profession you want without buying anything at the AH,
although you probably won't find it as convenient. If you don't want to be
a part of the economy, that's your choice, but it's a stretch to call
anyone who decides to play the market a "greedy rich ***."
