I fail to see the point in buyin gold when a couple hours a week on the
AH will rake in the gold, not to mention doing dailies and the like.

Some people seem use AH only to spend money to buy stuff and can't
imagine someone would earn from it. Some time ago some random person
in Dalaran saw me riding on the vendor mammoth and immediately accused
me of buying gold. He said that the mammoth was Blizzard's "gold buyer
detector" as it's impossible to get that amount of money by normal
means ;)

Clearly your accuser knows how to spend gold, but not earn it so s/he
assumes that everyone who has it, bought it.

I have a level 58 Paladin that I created less than a month ago. I
don't play that many hours a week, as I work 40+ hours a week and have
a 6+ hour daily commute and she had 2056 gold on her last night when I
logged out.

Granted I have been playing the game for awhile now and know how the
AH works but I see lots of beggars on my server who are higher
levels. A check to the Armory reveals that they either have no
profession or are still at the Apprentice level. They also seem to
spend all their time begging. If they wanted to level up fast and
not think about earning gold, fine. I see too many of them who seem
to spend all their time in a major city begging. They could be out in
the world earning that gold instead of whispering me for it.
