Steve, you seem awfully dogmatic at times. It's not charming. Look at
what you said above. Are you really that rigid in your thinking, or do
you just come across that way in text?
It's not that I'm being rigid. It's the gear and talents that make it
so.
Circumstances in the game don't always support one acting the way one
might have planned to, you know. Sometimes a person has to be flexible..
It's all well and good being flexible but there needs to be an
advantage to doing something. Being flexible is pointless if you are
less effective than you would be if you didn't have that flexibility.
Other than for pulling and crowd control there is no point to casting
an offensive spell as a Feral druid. None at all. As you mentioned
in your post, it costs too much of your mana to start casting spells.
It also hits for a pathetically small amount so you're never going to
be able to kill a level appropriate target with spells.
If you are feral there is a choice between cat or bear.
The thing is, there is feral and FERAL. Any druid can pop into feral
form to fight.
They can, but they wouldn't. The gear and talents just do not support
the choice. If you are not specced as feral, your feral attacks are
as pathetic as a feral's damaging spells. Also, there is absolutely
no overlap in gear or talents between feral dps and caster dps
abilities. In the same way that I can't see a reason for a feral
druid to cast a damaging spell (other than to pull), I can't see a
reason for a resto or a balance druid to attack something in feral
form. It's probably not even worth going into bear form to bash a mob
before a heal in an emergency. You might as well just cast cyclone or
nature's grasp as appropriate before healing.
If you specialize in feral tree talents there are still
times when you want or need to use spells.
Want maybe.... but I very much doubt that there would ever be a need
to cast a damaging spell as a Feral Druid.
No doubt many druids are not
pure feral or pure restro or pure balance. I have noticed that it is
common for your garden-variety Druid to be a hybrid, with talent points
in every tree. I don't personally see anything wrong with that.
Look at http://www.wowpopular.com/Druid/Talents which contains the
most popular talent choices for druids. This information if farmed
from the armory so is a good indication of what is popular. Notice
that there isn't a single case where someone has chosen both balance
and feral points. It's also very rare for someone to have any points
in feral if they have more than 17 points in resto.
I personally chose to go strictly feral. I am still driven at times to
resorting to spells. Heaven knows I don't prefer to, because my mana
pool is minuscule. I am out of mana after only a couple of shots. BUT
if I feel the need to take those shots, I'm taken 'em.
I feel that this is the root of your problems with your feral druid.
I cannot, in all honesty, think of a reason why I'd want to cast a
damaging spell as a feral druid other than to pull with*. Maybe
cyclone, roots or hibernate but never a damaging spell.
* Personally, I'd even pull with feral faerie fire, not a damaging
spell.
Maybe you could give a situation where you'd resort to damaging spells
as a feral druid.
