You have to do the download. The content on the DVD isn't complete and
current, considering all the recent updates. For example, the TBC install
you did doesn't know anything about death knights, their mounts, etc, all
of which you could potentially run across in the world. Those
multi-gigabyte files contain all that art, among other things.
