On the other hand, there's another thing to consider, which isn't *just*
that the game is easier (which in many places it is), but also that we're
just better players. Even when levelling a completely unfamiliar class, I
know much much more about the mechanics of the game and the strategies of
the quests I've done multiple times, and of *course* it's easier now. I'd
be worried if it wasn't.

No matter what Blizzard does, they can't reinstall your sense of wonder at
seeing the Gates of Ironforge for the first time.

Well said.

I remember my first moment of genuine wonder. I was playing my first
toon, a level ten Tauren Druid who was leaving Moonglade for the first
time. At first I didn't know how to get home, and I whined aloud about
having to wait for my (hour long) hearth cooldown. A friendly Druid led
me to the special Druid-only flight master and told me to talk to them.

So I talked to the the guy, he says what do you want? I sez I want to
go to Thunderbluff. I was expecting some rigmarole but suddenly I was
aloft on a windrider, my first in-game flight ever.

I was Ahhhhhhh! I'm not ready! How do I stop this thing!? How do I
steer it!? I soon realized I was helpless to control it, and all I
could do was wait and watch. I had no idea how long it would be. I was
unfamiliar with the terrain that was passing beneath me. So I sat back
and watched, and I passed over pretty snowy Winterspring... then scary
sick-looking Felwood, then the cool bluish forests of Ashenvale...

I am getting a visual tour of the whole huge continent. I'm getting my
first preview of the adventure that lies before me. I sat back
awestruck with my jaw hanging open. I thought, my GOD this place is
HUGE. It actually is a whole world.

Yep, taking long flights like that is amazing - first time i flew from
Stormwinf to Ironforge was a similar feeling - flying over places I'd
been before wasn't quite so amazing but a long distance over unexplored
territory was pretty cool. That's one thing that was a shame when they
shortened the old "tour of kalimdor" Auberdine-Teramore flight, which
used to go through Darkshore, Ashenvale, Stonetalon, Desolace, Mulgore,
Barrens and Dustwallow. Was amazing to go over all that as a newbie and
see how big the world was.

However once you got over the wonder it was really really annoying, and
I celebrated as much as anyone when they rerouted it and took a good 5
minutes off the trip :-P Those quest chains that used to send you
between Silithus/Ungoro/Tanaris and Darnassus/Moonglade/Winterspring
were horrendous with that flightpath - it was actually faster to hearht
to Ironforge, fly to Menethil, and then get the boat over and fly
wherever you were going :-P Would be kinda nice to have an option for
the old view though, as it was a really cool experience as a newbie.
