filled with objects, such as purchased from AH.

This is a classic symptom of item caching. Mailbox items all have unique
item IDs, so they are not visible to you until the client has loaded them
into the item cache. This is also why looting is so slow the first time you
do it after a patch, and why things show as "unknown" or "retreiving item
information".

Some things in the game block until the data is available (loot and mail
being the most noticeable ones), and some vamp with placeholders until the
real data is available (character names, item icons, etc.). What you're
seeing with your mail is simply a delay while the server shovels more data
into your client. *
