I just bought World of Warcraft for my son. After installing the game

It took all night to download (over 500 meg). He got up early to play

How many downloads are there? What is on that 4 gig dvd?
Thank you for your time and help;

Depends on what you bought him.
If you only just bought him the original version of the game, then you
probably have a lot of patches to go. When I bought the game, the
installed version was 1.7, but I had to patch up to 1.10 to start
playing. The current version 3.0.3. So whatever version installed
from the box, you have to download and install updates until you are
3.0.3.
If you also bought him The Burning Crusade expansion, installing that
will bring him up to 2.0.1. That will eliminate some of the patching,
but you'll still have to patch to 3.0.3.
If you also bought him the Wrath of the Lich King expansion,
installing that will bring him up to 3.0.1. After that, there are
only 2 patches needed to get up and running, 3.0.2 and 3.0.3.
Given the size of the patches you describe however, it sounds like one
of the first 2 scenarios are what you are experiencing. There are
ways to shorten this. First, start the game, and at the login screen,
look in the lower left corner and see what version of the game you are
now patched up to. Then go to wowwiki.com. Do a search for patch
mirrors. It should list places where you can download patches from.
Then find a patch that upgrades your current version to a new
version. Some patches will take up up several versions at once (I
once found a patch that upgrades you from any 1.X version to 2.0.1,
saved some time on reinstallation). Download whatever patches you
will need to upgrade to 3.0.3. Also, if you were downloading patches
using Blizzard's utility, that can be quite slow, which might be a
reason why it took all night to download 500 MB. These patch mirrors
should work faster, depending on your connection speed. Once that is
done, and hes patched up to 3.0.3, he'll be ready to play.
Alternatively, if you don't mind spending the money, go buy and
install the 2 expansions, bringing him up to 3.0.1, then he only has 2
patches to go through.
Its definitely a pain to get going, but the patches upgrading to
different versions of the game often contain new content. While the
patching process may not be fun, the continuing evolution of the game
definitely is. As for what is on the DVD, client-side software for
the game, texture files, character models, animations, all sorts of
stuff. Patches do 2 things. They change aspects of the game, and
they add new features to the game. Some of the patches can be quite
large as they add more images, textures, and models to the game.
