I can see OP has got his/her problem fixed, but...
The big change in 3.0.2 was the more detailed shadows - that killed
my system too (I'm running 5 copies of WoW at the same time - it was
unplayable after the patch).
My FPS hasn't dropped dramatically, but there's clearly something
weird going on.
Go to video options, special effects (or something like that) and at
the bottom theres some option or slider for shadows (I'm doing this
from memory, so the instructions are a little vague, sorry) - turn
it right down.
Even if you slide the little bar all the way to the left, you will
still see a small blob under your character - I don't remember
seeing the blob pre the 3.0.2 patch. Wheter or not that little blob
have any impact on system performance, I don't know.
Changing this single option made my system go from completely
unplayable to being smooth as silk.
My computer used to eat WoW alive at 1920x1200 wide and most of the
setings on max. I got 60fps capped (vSync on) everywhere (exept from
Shattrath) before the 3.0.2 patch. After the patch, my FPS can
sometimes drop to 35-50 even in SW. I have also noticed an increase
in latency after the latest patch(es) which may, or may not, be
related.
On a side note: it appears that the system requirements has been
updated. WoW now requires Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, and Service
Pack 1 for Vista. Don't know what difference this makes in regard to
FPS and latency though.

1. Updated System Requirements.
Since patch 3.0.2 several improvements have been made to effects and
levels of detail in the game. As a result, the game will drive
systems harder and you may see lower frames per second than before.
The first thing to bear in mind is that the scales for many
graphical options in the game have been adjusted so that a setting
that looks the same as it was before the patch, may actually be
significantly higher in real terms leading to a better ingame
graphical experience, but a lower frame rate too. In addition, the
system requirements have been updated to take account of operating
systems improvements:
* Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is now a requirement.
* Windows XP Service Pack 3 is now a requirement.
* Windows 2000 is now no longer a supported Operating System.
This means that if technical issues arise while playing the game
under Windows 2000 or without these Service Packs, our technical
support department may not be able to resolve them. We will still do
our best to provide troubleshooting advice, but if our suggestions
do not work, we will be unable to provide further assistance.
