I'm not so sure about this. Gear from one of the first instances
(Utgarde Keep, 70-72) has item levels of 155, which rivals T6/S4. I
think gear will be replaced much more quickly than you are estimating.
155 blue does not = 155 purple though. Likely the blue will have less
range of stats on it, or less of the stats.
True, but in most cases, 155 blue is ~equal to 141 purple, which is
the majority of BT/MH gear and 2.4 badge loot. The itemization is
simply different... not worse... different. Less diverse, but more
specific and strong in particular areas.
Finding an item with stats I'm familiar with:
Reinforced Velvet Helm
Binds when picked upHead Cloth
191 Armor
+48 Stamina
+49 Intellect
+43 Spirit
Durability 50 / 50
Requires Level 70
Equip: Increases spell power by 51.
Now, trying to find another head item without sockets is proving a
challenge
Well, this is the one that came to my mind (off Kael - T5):
Crown of the Sun
Binds when picked up
Head Cloth
188 Armor
+39 Stamina
+38 Intellect
+49 Spirit
Durability 60 / 60
Requires Level 70
Equip: Increases spell power by 57.
These are pretty similar, and one drops in the first instance in
WoTLK, one drops at the very end of T5.
so it won't be a straight comparison but priest T6 for
example:
Hood of Absolution
Binds when picked upHead Cloth
199 Armor
+36 Stamina
+39 Intellect
+27 Spirit
Meta Socket
Blue Socket
Socket Bonus: +5 Spell Power
Durability 60 / 60
Classes: Priest
Requires Level 70
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 17 (0.77% @ L70).
Equip: Increases spell power by 62.
Equip: Restores 10 mana per 5 sec.
Seems rather better to me, -12 sta, -10 int, -16 spi, yes, *but* +17
crit rating, +11 spellpower, +10 mp5 and + meta/blue sockets (I'm
suspecting it was originally the dps hood in fact, unlucky for the
healers who took the healer one before 3.0 as it's far better itemised
than the other T6 hood ended up being!)
Agree with you that that the T6 helm is better than this healer helm
from Utgarde, if socketed correctly.
T5 also compares well:
Cowl of the Avatar
Binds when picked upHead Cloth
181 Armor
+40 Stamina
+28 Intellect
+31 Spirit
Meta Socket
Yellow Socket
Socket Bonus: +2 mana per 5 sec.
Durability 60 / 60
Classes: Priest
Requires Level 70
Equip: Increases spell power by 55.
Equip: Restores 8 mana per 5 sec.
-8 sta, -21 int, -12 spi, +4 spellpower, +8mp5, +meta/yellow sockets.
I'd say the blue is a fraction better, but there's not that much in it
(depends if you like raw stats better than spellpower/regen really), and
this is an itemlevel 133 purple vs 155 blue.
Also agree, depending on gem choice, I find the Urgarde helm and the
T5 helm very similar.
Also note that every purple has a wider range of stats: the blue only
has 4, the purples have 5 or 6, plus sockets (never mind setbonuses)
As I mentioned above, different itemization is not necessarily worse.
Hell, if I can get 43 spirit on a healing helm WITHOUT gemming, that
seems like a huge win. That, in turn, allows me to either a) stack
spirit, or b) frees up other slots for other stat itemization.
Now, based on that, my Karazhan loot will indeed be replaced by any
blues I find, immediately. My badge loot should be safe for some time
yet though.
Still don't agree on this. Take these two examples
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=34890 (2.4 badge healer ring)
http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=38220 (healer ring from Utgarde Keep -
requires lvl 68!)
One would argue that these rings are the same... I would.
Not all gear has been listed yet, but I think a more clear
generalization of gear replacement would be:
- Dungeon blues, heroic epics and kara/gruul/mags epics (ilvl 115-120)
will be replaced immediately upon setting foot in Northrend.
- ZA/SSC/TK epics (ilvl 128-138) will be replaced in the first couple
of instances in WotLK or early questing
- MH/BT/Sunwell/2.4 badge epics (ilvl 141-151) will start being
replaced pretty quickly, with full replacement around level 76-77.
