In an instance, I know that if I let loose too early with everything I
have, I may well pull the aggro and die, so I watch how well things
are going in the early pulls and try to temper my damage to how well
the tank's holding aggro. On the other hand, I'm also undoubtedly
expendable - I'd rather go down and be rezzed than outlive the tank or
priest in a wipe, so, yes, I'll probably die a bit more often - goes
with the role. But neither of those are exactly rocket science.
Here's a question, as I'm currently leveling a mage.
My mage is currently 27, and part of a dedicated 5-man group[1]. Since level
18, we've done only instances.
What should my attack rotation be? I'm frost specced, and have a fair bit
of +frost gear, but I have a feeling that just spamming frostbolt may not
be the optimal approach.
I'm also sort of randomly choosing talents based on "Well, that looks
good.", so my spec may not be optimal either. The thing is, almost every
guide out there assumes you're soloing, so there's very little tactical
data for mages who only play in groups.
@ Level 70 - frost Mage cast sequence - well it's basically watch Omen & spam Frost Bolt for me, and if the target's frozen in place, cast an Ice Lance straight after the FB, There's a big chance BOTH will crit resulting in 3.5k + 2.3k damage. If the adds are being aoe tanked (Pally) blizzard can also do more damage - but that seemed to require about 4+ mobs being aoe tanked.
