I enjoyed the Quake series of games (Q3 was my favorite), and did many
memorable 1v1 battles with a friend of mine, so I will look at the
other recommendations, also. I liked being able to play custom maps.
I highly recommend stopping byhttp://tacticalgamer.com/and playing with
them. They play a variety of games (including WoW and many FPS) with the
emphasis on tactical (ie. organized) play. Ask in their forums and you
should get some good recommendations on what to switch to.
When I feel like a FPS instead of WoW, I play Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
(ETQW). It has 16x16-sized battle, both land and air vehicles, and
deployable weapon and sensor systems. There are multiple player classes.
There's an awards system that includes both volatile and persistent
aspects. The volatile aspect gives you greater abilities during a session
based on your level of participation. The persistent part just tracks how
many achievements you've attained, but doesn't give any abilities for them.
Quake Wars just hit my radar last night, so this is a timely
recommendation. I've always enjoyed the Quake series, although I
haven't kept up with it.
I'm still wrapping up my WoW activities (only 2 more pieces of gear to
go, which should take a week, at most), but I plan on evaluating a few
games this weekend.
The achievements sound intriguing, and a good compromise to the WoW
system that I no longer have time for. I like the fact that I'm
awarded in a given match, but I'm still on equal par with other
players.
Thanks again.
